Education Programs

Thank you for your interest in the Plano Symphony Orchestra Educational Programs. There are several components to the programs:

Symphony Sampler Concert for elementary school students
($5.00 per person)

The Symphony Sampler school concert is one of the most exciting arts partnership programs offered anywhere! The culmination of the program is the concert given during school time designed as part of the music curriculum for elementary school students. Students are bussed to the concert, and take a participatory role in the concert itself. The concert repertoire is set in August and participating schools are provided a CD of the concert music. A few weeks prior to the concert a symphony musician visits each of the schools. The musician discusses his/her instrument, what it’s like to play in the orchestra and demonstrates his instrument. The students are given a copy of the concert program to be taken home before the concert so that their family can share in the anticipation of the concert trip. This concert program has a “Musical Scavenger Hunt” for the whole family to do. Those who participate receive a “family pass” certificate to a Plano Symphony Orchestra dress rehearsal.

Plano Symphony Orchestra Instrument Petting Zoo

The “zoo” is a collection of orchestra instruments whose cases have been painted to look like different animals. This free service is available for events, schools, and festivals. The children are encouraged to “play” the “zoo” instruments for a hands-on experience. This is very popular with children from eight to ninety eight! For the safety of the participants and instruments a minimum of 6 volunteers from your organization are required to assist with the visit.

The “zoo” visits events with a trained “Zoo Keeper” for $150 who teaches about the instruments and performs some delightful musical excerpts. The children are then encouraged to “play” the “zoo” instruments. For the safety of the participants and instruments a minimum of 6 volunteers from your organization are required to assist with the visit.

Meet the Conductor For 2nd through 5th grade (per Maestro Guzman’s schedule)

Maestro Guzman visits the schools and discuses the orchestra and the role of a conductor. Mr. Guzman will also perform on the piano, if one is available. Children respond with great enthusiasm to Mr. Guzman’s visit; he’s quite popular! Schools with a Hispanic population may want to ask for a bilingual presentation.

Surround Sound For 4th - 5th grade (arranged around concert schedule)

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to sit in on a concert rehearsal with the musicians! They get a new perspective of teamwork! This must be arranged around the concert rehearsal schedule unless a school wanted to budget for a “Surround Sound” rehearsal on their own.

Dress Rehearsal

This is a wonderful opportunity to observe an orchestra at work, putting the final touches on their performance. Many dress rehearsals are open to the public at no charge. We request that those wishing to attend RSVP to the Plano Symphony Orchestra by the Thursday before the performance date. Participants will be seated in the balcony or designated area during the rehearsal. Our conductor will visit with groups attending the rehearsal if it has been arranged in advance. To make arrangements please contact the PSO office no less than one week prior to a performance. (Dress rehearsals and any visits by our conductor during rehearsals may be cancelled by the PSO without notice)

PSA and Web Site invite children to explore music

The public service announcement (PSA) is a service developed by the American Symphony Orchestra League (ASOL) in conjunction with ABC Television. Drawing on children’s natural interest in sports, the PSA shows children that music offers similar fun, excitement, and rewards. The web site is located at www.playmusic.org. The web site introduces children to orchestras and orchestral instruments. It includes interactive games as well as audio sound bites. Contents of the site will be updated regularly, and we encourage your comments and suggestions for new features. The site is linked to member orchestra’s web sites, where available.
